Router Firmware Bug Triggers Widespread Internet Outage

By Bradley Mitchell

Many people around the world found the Web unreachable today due to an unexpected failure of some Internet routers. The failure was apparently caused by firmware update that some Juniper routers couldn't handle, causing them to crash. Some initial reports of the issue noted that the routers also core dumped, a term that's in every good techie's vocabulary but may sound unnecessarily alarming to the general public. Fortunately, router firmware can normally be repaired without damaging the hardware, and recovery from this particular incident seemed to be smooth.
