New technology to allow accurate cardiac images

First technology of the sub-continent, the 320-Slice Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner is being brought to the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD) to get accurate cardiac image in short time, Daily Times learnt.

Director KIHD Prof Dr Abdus Samad said that the 320-Slice CT scanner for accurate cardiac imaging is the latest technology, which is being brought to KIHD, adding, there is no such a modern technology found in whole sub-continent. Prior to this, Pakistan has up to 128-slice CT scanners.

The facility provides accuracy in the result and is also a cheap test as the recent angiography for examination of heart costs Rs 6,000 in KIHD while the new system costs Rs 5,000, he informed.

He said that Letter of Credit (LoC) for the machine had been issued while it would reach in few weeks. The image quality from 320-slice scan provides much better patient care through more accurate diagnoses, he stated.

Prof Samad said angiography is an invasive method of examination heart, in which patient has to admit in hospital for a day and there is not 100 per cent accuracy in it.

“However, examination of heart through this innovative technology is very simple method, which scan heart in very short span of time and give accurate result,” he said.

To a query, he said, the radiations of the new technology were very low as compared to current angiography.

He said: “The 320-slice volume scan offers 16 cm of imaging area in one rotation. This allows an image of the entire heart during one phase, rather than taking several images and stitching them together, as with lesser slice scanners.”
